Monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins have been produced for a number of years through the use of fermentors, bioreactors, and hollow fiber systems. Although these systems have proven to be very effective, they are generally expensive to run and are mainly cost effective only for very large quantities of cells and their secreted products.

The INTEGRA CELLine devices incorporate the use of membranes for both gassing and compartmentalization (concentrating) to enable the user to produce small to medium quantities of their product without the high cost. By using a gas permeable membrane on the bottom of the devices for oxygen exchange, and a semi-permeable membrane to allow for nutrient exchange, the CELLine devices concentrate secreted products while reducing the need for costly media and growth factors.
